Handling this traditional but still captivating building material has its quirks, today perhaps more than ever. On the one hand it can no longer be taken for granted that stonemasonry skills will be readily available, while there are also new requirements and applications, not to mention damaging environmental influences, that create uncertainty for planners and implementers. This book is designed to provide assistance. - From cornice to curtain-walling: all details in words and sectional drawings - Are you looking for a particular stone? The most important domestic types of stone with supplier details - Various surface treatments and their visual effect - Documentation of 15 selected example applications

"Almost every industry in the world has benefited from the invention of plastics, but it is only in the recent past that they have begun to be appreciated as architectural materials in their own right. Plastics are quickly becoming one of the most ubiquitous materials in construction and have the potential to reshape the roles of architects and engineers, as well as the construction industry at large. As a building material, plastic allows for easily molded and formed shapes, leading to increasingly malleable design processes. Despite being the most deeply engineered building materials today, plastics are still in the nascent stages of understanding in terms of their potential applications and uses. In Permanent Change an interdisciplinary group of architects, historians, theorists, and engineers collectively explore the past, present, and future possibilities of this innovative building material"-- "While plastics are perhaps the most deeply engineered building materials today, we are still in the nascent stages of understanding their potential applications and uses. Permanent Change sheds new light on these materials and their implications for the fields of architecture and engineering. Materials that once forecast easily molded shapes have become a permanent measure and control point in design. Permanent Change is the fourth in the series Columbia Books on Materials and Architecture"--

The current material customer of translucent building materials Translucent materials give architects far more possibilities to exploit the sensual interplay of light and the fascination of interior-exterior interaction than plain glass, a fact proved by their increasing application. Traditionally, stretched paper, finely-cut stone, or stained glass were used to create mood and atmosphere. These are now giving way to a new generation of innovative materials - composite glass, synthetic panels, membranes and perforated metals.

The chapters cover the basic principles of working with timber and provide detailed information on subjects such as thermal performance, sound insulation and fire protection. There is also a chapter devoted to the ecological significance of wood. Timber as a loadbearing material is considered and topics such as new methods of jointing, transport and erection are documented. The second part of the book presents a large number of built examples, which feature some classic structures but focus chiefly on more recent buildings. These are presented with full illustrations, details and plans which depict solutions as built for various loadbearing systems. The spectrum of timber structures presented ranges from heavy-duty bridges to multi-storey residential buildings and the magnificent Expo roof. The second chapter of examples deals specifically with topics such as facades, building envelope etc. All drawings and illustrations have been carefully produced to ensure that the details and methods of construction documented are clear and comprehensible.
